The Journey North
A collaborative effort between teachers, students and scientists, the users of this site track the blooming of Daffodils, the migration of Monarch Butterflies and Loons, and the travels of different species of Whales.
Journey North
"The journeys of a dozen migratory species are tracked each spring. Students share their own field observations with classrooms across the Hemisphere. In addition, students are linked with scientists who provide their expertise directly to the classroom. Several migrations are tracked by satellite telemetry, providing live coverage of individual animals as they migrate. As the spring season sweeps across the Hemisphere, students note changes in daylight, temperatures, & all living things as the food chain comes back to life."

US/Chinese CyberWar
Here is a Wired news item on a little known underground guerilla war heating up between the US and China.
Crackers Expand Private War
As China and the United States attempt to peacefully end their diplomatic standoff sparked by the mid-air collision between a U.S. spy plane and a Chinese fighter jet, crackers from both countries continue to wage private wars on the Internet."
"American cracker group PoizonBOx has defaced at least a hundred Chinese websites since April 4. Chinese hackers are now vowing to retaliate with a planned week-long all-out crack attack on American websites and networks which will start on May 1."

Air Pirates - Vintage Aircraft Recovery
The Air Pirates are an interesting group specializing in the recovery of mostly crashed vintage aircraft from remote locations. Unfortunately, the choice of background image renders the text almost unreadable, you will have to highlight the text to read it. There are lots of interesting photos.
Air Pirates
"Over the past thirty years they have recovered over sixty five aircraft."
"They have recovered aircraft from the jungles of New Guinea, from beneath 265 feet of ice inside a moving glacier in Greenland, from the bottom of lakes in Alaska and Canada, snuck into Myan Mar "Burma" in the bottom of a Teak smugglers boat, been shot at by the communist New Peoples Army in the Philippines, were captured on Bougainville during the evolution and held in a small metal box, and have descended to a depth of two thousand feet in the deep submersible "Pisces V" on two occasions to search for aircraft on the bottom of the Pacific. A Short Course in Aeronautics
This is a very detailed and accessable course on the principles of flight, targetted towards pilots. It has very clear explanations and diagrams.
See How It Flies
"A new spin on the perceptions, procedures, and principles of flight."
"This book is intended to appeal to pilots and everyone else who is interested in how airplanes behave. The idea is to concentrate on ideas that are useful in the cockpit, and to explain them as clearly as possible.
In addition to describing how the airplane behaves, this book describes in some detail why the airplane behaves that way."
"This is not meant to be an aerodynamics book. If you want to build airplanes, go read an aerodynamics book. If you want to fly airplanes, read this book."

Tadpoles of the United States and Canada: A Tutorial and Key
Tadpoles used to look all the same to me, now I can tell them apart. This is actually more than I ever wanted to know about tadpoles, and then again, not enough. Needed here is a cross referance from the given latin names to the popular names.
USGS Patuxent Wildlife Research Center "Tadpoles of the United States and Canada: A Tutorial and Key"
"A key for the tadpoles of the United States and Canada features a different format and approach to identifying frog larvae. More details of ontogenetic variation are included than in many keys, and more attention is paid to using characteristics of living tadpoles. A tutorial examines morphological traits, and color photographs are included to simplify the identification process."
