The Whovel
After three Newfoundland blizzards in 5 days, and more to come tonight, I could really use one of these.
Whovel
"today's most advanced snow removal machine - and human powered"
"The Whovel uses your body weight to lift and throw snow and slush. With leverage, the Whovel magnifies your effort. It can double the power you supply and avoid many of the risks associated with snow shoveling."

2004-2005 Flu Season CDC Weekly Update
Here it comes. Italy is reporting 100,000 cases, with 40% of all the cases being children aged between 0 and 4 years. And 50% of current US cases are in the North East US. However, it does not look to be near as bad as last year. Also, the current vaccine appears to be a good match for most of the flu variants currently circulating.
CDC - Influenza (Flu) | Weekly Report: Influenza Summary Update 52, 2004-2005 Season
"CDC has antigenically characterized 107 influenza viruses collected by U.S. laboratories since October 1, 2004: eighty-five influenza A (H3N2) viruses and 22 influenza B viruses. All of the influenza A (H3N2) isolates were characterized as A/Fujian/411/2002-like (H3N2), which is the influenza A (H3N2) component recommended for the 2004-05 influenza vaccine."
"Nineteen of the influenza B viruses isolated this season belong to the B/Yamagata lineage and were characterized as B/Shanghai/361/2002-like, which is the influenza B component recommended for the 2004-05 influenza vaccine. Three influenza B viruses belong to the B/Victoria lineage and were characterized as B/Hong Kong/330/2001-like."

UniSUV
This is the most bizarre vehicle I have ever seen. It is basically a huge one wheeled SUV. It took some imagination to come up with this.

Crow Culture
This interesting website documents observations of American Crow culture and language. It has sonograms, recordings and interpretations of various calls and lots of interesting observations of Crow life.
Introduction to crows.net
"The working hypothesis for the Crows.net Project is that the American crow, Corvus brachyrhynchos, is a highly intelligent species, with fully developed language and culture."
"Several times in the past, I have heard reports of "crow funerals", various types of group behavior by which crows acknowledge the death of another crow. I had never observed anything that might fit into this category of behavior until today."

No More Summer
Is a large climate change coming sooner than later ? Many scientists think that the climate could flip into another ice age within our lifetime. Better make the most of the next few summers while there still is such a thing. Even the Pentagon is worried about how something like this could compromise US national security.
A Chilling Possibility
"Global warming could plunge North America and Western Europe into a deep freeze, possibly within only a few decades. That's the paradoxical scenario gaining credibility among many climate scientists. The thawing of sea ice covering the Arctic could disturb or even halt large currents in the Atlantic Ocean. Without the vast heat that these ocean currents deliver--comparable to the power generation of a million nuclear power plants--Europe's average temperature would likely drop 5 to 10°C (9 to 18°F)"

Icebergs on Mars
With all the current hoopla about water on Mars, here is an interesting scientific paper from the 2003 Sixth International Conference on Mars that presents evidence of even stranger things. Were there icebergs floating on the Martian seas ?
ICE KEEL SCOUR MARKS ON MARS
"We present new observations from
preliminary analyses of Mars Global Surveyor Mars
Orbiter Camera images of surficial features interpreted
to be the result of interactions between the keels of
floating ice masses on submerged sediment. These
narrow, intersecting curvilinear trough-like features
are ice keel scour marks and are present in large
reaches of the Kasei Valles system."
